STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLASSIC STYLE SHELVING
If you plan to install your shelves after 5:00 PM Eastern time zone or on a weekend, give HouseWerks advance notice and we will assure that staff will be available to answer your installation questions.
At any time during the installation process, if you need help or advice, call HouseWerks at:

Step 0. Clear Area and gather all tools needed, hardware supplied, and shelving materials provided.
Clear the area where the shelving is to be installed. Lay out all shelves, vertical supports, pins, and screws as well as printed instructions from our website, if needed.
Before proceeding, assemble the following tools:
Step stool
Hammer and small nail (about 2" long)
Electric drill or Battery-Powered Drill (Variable Speed is preferable),
Drill bits (3/16" or 1/8"),
Screwdriver drill bit (blue) included with the screws in the hardware package,
Carpenter's Level,
Pencil (soft lead #2),
Painter's Tape (blue color) - has low adhesive properties - won't remove paint or wallboard paper)[optional],
Measuring tape (metal tape preferred),
Wall stud finder [optional],
Countersink bit (to assure screw head will be below surface of the shelf) [optional], and
Pliers (either channel locks or vice grips).
You will also need a helper and some patience. Allow about 30-40 minutes to mark each wall, and about 10-15 minutes per shelf for installation for units in which the vertical supports rest on the floor. Wall-supported units, in which vertical supports do not extend to the floor, may take a little longer.
Watch the Installation Video. After clicking on the link, DO NOT MOVE YOUR MOUSE.
For wall-mounted shelving units (vertical supports don't extend to floor), allow about 15-20 minutes per shelf for installation and watch the Wall-Mounted Slideshow.
Step 1. Locate Wall Studs
The wall studs need to be located so that the wall can be marked for correct shelf attachment. The location of the wall studs will determine where along a shelf the pilot holes will be drilled and where the deck screws will be driven. For a detailed description of this process, select Locating Wall Studs.
-
Locate the studs along the wall where your shelves will be located.
- To verify location of wall studs, use a hammer and nail to tap exploratory holes into your drywall. Caution - To assure that holes will not be seen after installation, tap holes just below the upper surface of your top shelf and the bottom shelf. After the positions are verified, draw a very light line in pencil on the wall indicating the center of the wall stud.
-
If the nail is easily pounded in with little resistance, you have missed the wall stud.
If the nail hits something solid, you have located a stud. Continue to tap holes in that area to determine the center of the stud. The distance between the centers of two adjacent wall studs is usually 16", but may also be 20" or 24". After you have identified two adjacent studs, you'll know where to expect the remaining studs. You must still tap exploratory hole to confirm this. Repeat this process for the bottom shelf and the top shelf. Draw a line on the wall between the center of the stud on top shelf and the center of the stud on the bottom shelf.
The center of the studs for the shelves in between should lie very close to this line.
-
Mark location of wall studs with pencil only at shelf heights so the marks will not have to be removed after installation.
-
Wall studs are usually 1.5" wide, try to mark the middle of the stud, not the edge. Several holes need to be tested close to the stud to determine the center position. The center of the stud can be determined much easier if you invest in an electronic stud finder.
-
Measure the distance of stud locations. You will use these distances when securing your shelves.
Step 2. Place Foam
Place foam pieces on the floor as a support. If the height isn't tall enough, you can use books or any other objects to support the shelves until each has been attached to the wall.
Step 3. Place Shelf 1
Place Shelf 1 on top of foam in proper location along wall.
Step 4. Supports
Insert the vertical supports into the notches in Shelf 1.
Assure that the ends marked "bottom" are in the down position.
Step 5. Shelf 1 Pins
Insert two steel dowel pins horizontally into each vertical support to hold Shelf 1, which is currently held in place by the foam or other objects.
Step 6. Pins for Shelf 2
Insert two steel dowel pins into each support for the next shelf.
Step 7. Slide Shelf
Slide next shelf onto the vertical support until it rests on the dowel pins.
Step 8. Mark studs and Drill Holes
Mark stud locations using the distances you found in Step 0. With shelf in place, mark the back strip of the shelf at stud location. Drill pilot holes through the back strip of the shelf, through the drywall, and into the wall stud.
Step 9. Secure Shelf
Make sure the vertical supports are plumb (form a 90 degree angle with the floor (also will be parallel to the two side walls). Place shelf in line with the marks on the wall previously drawn so the all of the shelves are stacked a perfect vertical line. Secure shelf to wall using the 3.5" screws provided. Sufficient screws are included to drive a screw into each wall stud along the length of the shelf. For most installations, this will be one screw every 16".
For shelf ends that abut side walls, you may only find one wall stud, which is usually in the corner. You may need to purchase hollow wall fasteners to secure the shelf side near the front. Do not fully tighten screws, leave 1/4" of the threads exposed.
Step 10. Repeat Process
Repeat Steps 6-19 for each of the remaining shelves.
Step 11. Top Shelf
Place top shelf on vertical supports and secure to the studs.
Step 12. Remove Foam
Remove foam rubber and let Shelf 1 rest on pins. It is not necessary to secure Shelf 1 to studs, but doing so would add extra stability.
Step 13. Tighten Screws
Tighten screws until head is flush with wood. It is suggested that you use a countersink bit
after the pilot hole has been drilled. After the countersink has been drilled, you can drive the screw head just slightly below the surface of the wood without causing the wood surface to splinter. Make sure that you drive the screw with the blue bit provided until it is a tight fit, but do not over-tighten. This will allow for the use of screw-hole covers to hide the screw heads from view. The screw-hole covers are thin, peel-off adhesive disks with a diameter of about 0.5".
